Molasses Cookies

These are my favorite cookies. The recipe is from my Aunt Bessie. She often makes them and brings me a bag full when I see her. Well, sure I could make them for myself, but it just wouldn't be the same!

Ingredients:

1/2 cup molasses
5 teaspoons baking soda
2 1/2 cups flour
2 1/2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
2 1/2 cups oatmeal
3/4 cup butter
3/4 cup shortening
2 eggs

Molasses Cookies
Directions:

Heat molasses in microwave or on the stove. Stir in baking soda. Set aside. Note: the baking soda makes it puff up, so heat in a larger bowl.

Mix flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and oatmeal in a large bowl. Cut in butter and shortening until crumbly. Stir in molasses. Add unbeaten eggs. Mix well.

Roll in balls. Arrange on ungreased cookie sheet 2 inches apart. Bake at 350 degrees F. for 10 to 15 minutes.
