| NOTES: |
This is my grandfather (who was known
by his middle name, Weir) and my grandmother. I
never knew them, my grandfather died 2 years before
I was born and my grandmother 2 years after. They
had two children, my father Mervin Ellwood and my
aunt Velma Bernice. Margaret died in 1959 in Griswold,
Manitoba.
I have a little diary
that Weir kept in 1908. In it he details
the chores that were done that day, and
never fails to mention the weather:
"It was a fine day", "a
beautiful day", once even "an
extra fine day". The first entry in
the book was "saw a meadowlark
today". And occasionally he will
mention "all hands are well".
According to the book he farmed grain and
hogs. The boys seemed to work together a
lot - there was always mention of
Charlie, Lee, Milton and Wallace - either
one of them was helping him with
something or he was helping them.
Later on he gave up farming and
worked at the Brandon Mental Hospital. I have
letters that he wrote to Maggie and that she wrote
to him during the 40's. It seems that he must
have stayed there during the week at least. It's
funny it is now a 30 minute drive from Griswold,
but then I guess transportation was not what we
have today. And no e-mail either! I remember Mom
and Dad talking about visiting him in the hospital
and he would take them through, unlocking and
re-locking all the doors behind them.
